So your ring fits comfortably and suits you perfectly: with these simple methods you can determine your ring size reliably at home — no special knowledge required.
Why the Right Ring Size Matters
A ring is often much more than just a piece of jewelry. It can represent love, connection, a special memory, or a particular moment in life. All the more reason for it to fit comfortably: not so tight that it presses, and not so loose that it slips off or gets lost.
You can determine the right ring size yourself in just a few simple steps. All you need is either a ring that already fits well, or a narrow strip of paper or a non-stretch thread — both usually easy to find at home.
Method 1: Measure a Ring That Fits
If you already own a ring that fits well on the desired finger, this is the simplest and most reliable way to find your size: simply measure its inner diameter.
- Place the ring flat on a level surface, such as a sheet of paper.
- Measure the inner diameter from one inner edge to the opposite inner edge — ideally using a ruler in millimeters.
- Make sure you're measuring only the inner space, not accidentally including the outer edges of the ring.
- Compare the measured value with our ring size chart below.
Method 2: Measure Your Finger's Circumference
If you don't have a well-fitting ring on hand, you can determine your ring size just as reliably using a narrow strip of paper or a non-stretch thread.
- Wrap the paper strip or thread loosely around the spot where the ring will be worn.
- Mark the point where the two ends meet.
- Measure the length up to the mark in millimeters.
- Divide the measured circumference by 3.14 (pi) to get the approximate inner diameter.
Example: A finger circumference of 54 mm corresponds to an inner diameter of approximately 17.2 mm — this matches German ring size 54.

Other Ways to Determine Your Size
You can also use a printable ring template or a special ring sizing strip. These tools are especially useful when ordering online and you don't have a well-fitting ring to compare.
When printing a template, make sure it is printed at actual size and without any automatic page scaling by your printer — otherwise the size will be incorrect.
Tip for a Ring as a Gift
If you'd like to give a ring as a surprise, you can discreetly borrow a well-fitting ring from the recipient and measure its inner diameter. Alternatively, friends or family members are often happy to discreetly help determine the size.
Important Notes on Measuring
- Measure your finger preferably in the evening, as fingers can swell slightly over the course of the day.
- Fingers can be a bit thicker in warm conditions and thinner in cold ones, so measure at a comfortable room temperature.
- Don't measure right after exercise or physical exertion.
- Wide rings often fit more tightly than narrow ones. In this case, it may be worth choosing one size larger.
- Fingers on the right and left hand can differ in size — always measure the finger the ring will actually be worn on.
- The ring should slide comfortably over the knuckle, but not be so loose that it could accidentally slip off.
Our tip: If you're between two sizes, it's usually best to choose the larger size for a narrow ring. For particularly wide styles, a slightly larger size is often more comfortable too.
